Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan was born in Amersfoort, the Netherlands on the 7th of March 1872. He entered the Academy of fine art in Amsterdam in 1892, already a qualified primary school teacher he continued his teaching while practicing painting. His early work consisted mainly of landscapes of his native country, depicting windmills, fields and rivers.

In 1906 he changed the spelling of his surname to Mondrian, during this same period a series of his canvases showed an inkling of the abstraction that would shape his later work. He moved to Paris in 1912 and the influence of Cubism marked a turning point in Mondrian's career. He move back to Holland during World War I and didn't move back to Paris for 5 years, during in which time his work developed towards pure abstraction, the curved lines and objects of nature disappeared from his paintings.

In his ground breaking paintings of the 1920s, he strictly limited his colour palette to black, white, and the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. These Iconic painting's with a few horizontal and vertical black lines and select blocks of colour, became Mondrian's best known works.

He moved to London for two years before settling in New York City in 1940 , he continued painting and in his later work he added coloured and double lines and finally the famous black grid was replaced with lines of coloured squares. Mondrian was devoted to his work and remained unmarried all his life, he died of pneumonia in 1944, aged 71.
