LEGACY 1
-

The Sheaffer Legacy 1 made its debut in September 1995 with a more than reminiscent look of the PFM, Sheaffer’s “Pen for Men”.
An early Legacy 1 advert quotes; “To meet the demands of today’s consumers, Sheaffer has created a distinctly modern design which blends 1950’s styling with 1990’s precision engineering”.
The following three finishes introduced the Legacy 1 range;

-
840- BLACK LAQUE CAP & BARREL.
841-PALLADIUM ELECTROPLATED CAP & BLACK LAQUE BARREL.
842-BRUSHED GOLD ELECTROPLATED CAP & BLACK LAQUE BARREL.

Its unique filling system allows the user, the tradition of a touchdown filling system, while having the convenience of loading with an ink cartridge.
The following details of how to use the Legacy touchdown system were taken from the September/October 1995 Pen World magazine.

TO FILL THE LEGACY; Hold the pen vertically, unscrew plunger knob at the back of the pen and extend the plunger to full length. Immerse the nib approximately ¾ of an inch, while the nib is submerged, push the plunger back in and extend again. On the final down stroke, press the plunger down firmly. Leave the nib in ink, count to ten and screw plunger knob tightly to the barrel. Remove the nib from the ink and hold it against the absorbent cloth for three seconds to draw out excess ink. Carefully wipe ink section clean with soft cloth or tissue. The Legacy may be used with ink cartridges by those less adventurous

The Legacy 1 body is fitted with the Sheaffer legendary inlaid nib in 18K solid gold, which in turn is fitted with a unique 23K gold electroplated convertor. The cap’s live action clip has an inner spring for an adjustable yet consistently firm grip. The making of each Legacy 1 fountain pen required over 300 production steps, many of these by hand, all of which were carried out entirely at the Fort Madison production facility.

1996 saw the introduction of three new finishes in the Legacy 1, which added a touch of colour to the range. The pens have the brushed gold cap with a lacquered finished to the barrel in blue, burgundy or green

837- BRUSHED GOLD ELECTROPLATED CAP & BLUE LAQUE BARREL.
838- BRUSHED GOLD ELECTROPLATED CAP & GREEN LAQUE BARREL
839- BRUSHED GOLD ELECTROPLATED CAP & BURGUNDY LAQUE BARREL

In the same year two stunning Legacy 1 pens were made in co-operation with Classic Pens Inc, themed on the American Civil War, the CP4 Washington and Richmond were the first limited editions made in the Legacy. The Washington design reflects the North’s diverse culture and urban development while the Richmond moiré pattern evokes an agrarian culture and the graceful flowing rivers of the South. Originally Classic Pens planned an edition of 1865 sets to correspond with the year that war ended, however just before the launch, Bic assumed control of Sheaffer and an agreement was reached between Sheaffer and Classic Pens to limit production to 500 sets.

The density and complexity of the Washington Vague design reflects the North’s diversified culture, urban development, industry, railway system and ethnic variety. The regularity of the pattern suggests the precision and organization of a society heralding the modern Age and the variety of the United States today.
The sinuous fluid grace of the Richmond Moire pattern evokes the majestic, lazily flowing rivers of the South and the gracious elegance of Southern society. The soft waves of the pattern reflect the South’s foundation in organic agriculture and the relaxed rhythms of nature.

While creating the patterns for CP4 Pens Washington and Richmond, Murelli and Andreas Lambrou designed some wonderful patterns together, of course not all of them could be chosen, but some did re-appear in later CP Collections.

Classic pens Inc commisioned Dale Harris to hand engrave a sterling silver Legacy 1 fountain pen from unused CP4 blanks, Harris was a silversmith famous for his sterling silver buckles and various western gear. It was intended to be a prototype for a Classic Pen Inc, LB Series of 100 Limited Edition fountain pens, unfortunately Dale Harris passed away before any of the pens in the series were made.

In 2008 the Roaring 20's Limited Edition was introduced in a total of 1,913 writing instruments, 1108 fountain pens and 805 rollerball pens. Artfully engraved on gleaming Sterling Silver, the Sheaffer's Roaring Twenties Limited Edition pays tribute to the cultural trends from the 1920's, a decade that is looked upon with great nostalgia and whose legacy still lives on. The detailed images appear in a mural-like fashion, and recall landmark events, people, and places - including aviation, Art Deco, baseball, and the Charleston - as well as the role Sheaffer played within the fine writing industry during this vibrant period.

New for 2009 the second edition of the Heritage Victorian Series fountain pen to honor one of the most prolific artisans of the period – William Morris. He founded the English Arts and Crafts Movement. In 1861 and set up his own company, producing an impressive range of decorative items for home, including furniture, rugs and textiles, ceramics and stained glass. One of Morris's chief contributions was as a designer of repeating patterns for wallpaper and textiles, many of which were based on a close observation of nature and flora. The hallmarked sterling silver cap and barrel cut in a elegant and intricate 'Victorian Era' design and trimmed with palladium electroplate.
